Imaging providers support surgeon-led care by delivering diagnostic studies required for surgical evaluation, planning, and post-operative follow-up. Imaging services are coordinated as part of a broader episode of care, with Luminary ensuring coverage, pricing, and reimbursement are clearly defined before services are rendered.

Depending on how a case is structured, imaging providers may be reimbursed directly by Luminary or through the surgeon as part of the overall bundled payment. In all cases, Luminary ensures imaging partners are paid the agreed-upon amount. Imaging services commonly involved in Luminary-supported cases include:

MRI, used for detailed assessment of soft tissue, spine, and joint pathology
CT, supporting complex anatomical evaluation and surgical planning
Ultrasound, used for targeted diagnostic assessment
X-ray, supporting baseline imaging, follow-up, and post-surgical evaluation

This approach allows imaging providers to focus on timely, high-quality diagnostics while Luminary manages financial coordination and payment certainty.

Overview:

Luminary Health supports surgeon-led care by coordinating the financial and operational components of each surgical episode. Surgeons in the Luminary Health network receive referrals from large self-insured employers and retain full control over how their cases are managed, including how downstream partners are engaged and reimbursed.

Before a case is scheduled, Luminary works with the surgeon and all involved downstream partners—including facilities, anesthesia, pathology, imaging, and device or implant suppliers—to confirm coverage, pricing, and operational readiness. This upfront coordination ensures clear expectations, efficient case execution, and timely reimbursement for every party involved.

Depending on how a case is structured, downstream partners may be reimbursed directly by Luminary or through the surgeon as part of the bundled surgical payment. In all arrangements, Luminary ensures partners are paid the pre-negotiated amount following completion of the episode of care.

How It Works

Luminary Health has longstanding partnerships with many of the nation’s leading self-insured employers and third-party benefits administrators. When you contract with Luminary Health, employees from these organizations will be referred to your practice for surgical care.

Luminary offers a “bundled” reimbursement model where you control the downstream contracts and reimbursement to your facility, anesthesia group, and pathologist. Alternatively, you can opt for Luminary to control distribution of downstream reimbursements on your behalf.

Self-Insured Organizations

Many of the nation’s largest companies and government organizations now self-insure their workforce. Instead of paying monthly premiums to an insurance company, these “self-insured” organizations directly reimburse the healthcare services consumed by their employees. Most of the fortune 500 and may SMB companies are now self-insured.

What is a convener?

Most self-insured organizations partner with one of several third-party benefit administrators (otherwise known as a convener) to control and predict healthcare expenditures. Some conveners specialize in guiding employees who need surgical care.

Care Advocates

Most convener organizations employ care advocates. A care advocate works one-on-one with the employees of an organization to recommend where they and their family members can go to receive appropriate healthcare services. Care advocates recommend preferred surgeons to the patient whenever surgical services are required. Once the patient makes a selection, the care advocate communicates the referral to the practice.
